In the last one hundred years, jazz has experienced many evolutions in style. Although these jazz styles have different music elements, they share the two most important elements of jazz music -- improvisation and swing. In this book, we will start with swing, and learn how to improvise within a swing feel.

This book consists of three parts and the attached two CDs.

Part I: The goal of these 20 exercises is to learn how to swing. They start with basic rhythm and articulation.

Part II: The 12 etudes focus on "rhythm." Each etude introduces an idiomatical rhythm in the jazz style.

Part III: The 10 tunes are based on chord progressions from well-known jazz standards. The play-alongs on these tunes could also be accompaniments of the jazz standards that they refer to.

The CDs contain demonstrations of all exercises / etudes / tunes, and play-alongs.

It don't mean a thing (if it ain't got that swing)《沒有搖擺感就一錢不值》完全表達了搖擺對於爵士樂的重要性。

Preface

Jazz is a music originating from America in the early 20th century. In the last one hundred years, jazz has experi- enced many evolutions in style. These happened for several reasons including instrumentation, music theory, and impro- visation. Although these jazz styles have different music elements, they share the two most important elements of jazz music -- improvisation and swing.

In this book, we will start with swing, and learn how to improvise within a swing feel.

【Some thoughts about swing】

Swing is one of the most important elements in jazz. The title of Duke Ellington's composition, It don't mean a thing (if it ain't got that swing), demonstrates the importance of swing.

In general, music that makes people dance or clap swings. In jazz, swing has a more specific definition. In order to play with a swing feel, three principles should be followed:

(1) Constant beats.
(2) Accents on beats two and four.
(3) Uneven eighth notes; the first one long, the second one short; the first one light, the second one strong.

【How to use this book】

This book consists of three parts: the first containing 20 exercises, the second 12 etudes, the third 10 tunes. The attached two CDs contain demonstrations of all exercises/ etudes/tunes, and play-alongs (accompaniments).

The goal of the exercises is to learn how to swing. They start with basic rhythm and articulation, and then teach the swing feel step by step.

The etudes focus on "rhythm." Each etude introduces an idiomatical rhythm in the jazz style. The etudes are based on two different chord progressions. The first six etudes are based on a 12-bar blues, while the next six are based on rhythm changes*. On the audio CD demonstrations, each etude is faster than the previous one. The play-alongs have five different tempos for practice.

The tunes are based on chord progressions from well- known jazz standards (see list below). The play-alongs on these tunes could also be accompaniments of the jazz standards that they refer to.
